DOL ODEOP Hiring Event

Situation

President Barack Obama announced in October 2009 an initiative to increase the employment of people with disabilities in the Federal workforce. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Department of Labor's (DOL's) Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) were tasked in collaborating to facilitate a daylong event dedicated to the hiring of people with disabilities.

Task

Work together with ODEP and OPM to coordinate a daylong, invitation only Federal Hiring Event for People with Disabilities. Representatives from many agencies reviewed resumes prior to the event, and invited prospective candidates for interviews.

Action

HCDI coordinated logistics for the event and scheduled nearly 500 interviews for 72 Federal government agencies. In addition, HCDI arranged an additional "informational fair" to serve as a venue for the public (those with and without disabilities) to meet agency representatives, drop off resumes, and receive information about the Federal hiring process.

Result

Awareness within Federal agencies has increased and there is hope for a rise in employment for persons with disabilities. New relationships have been formed in an effort to implement new policies and practices to continuously increase employment opportunities.
